I have done both. For less expensive items I make my own lamps. Sometimes they turn out rather 'Crafty' and homemade looking - which in someways it great. But for those treasures that i don't want to screw up i have taken it to a professional. Which turned out great.
While in college, my husband made liquor bottle lamps. Not very classy, but very college-esqe. I do have to say, it was pretty crafy of him. But they will never be in our home. :)
Alysia, We are no longer friends. I had never thought of liquor bottle lamps. You brought up the idea and then shot it down in the same comment. Now Jennifer will never go for it. Can't you just see Jim Beam lamps all over the house? It would be legendary.
I had a milk glass vase made into a lamp. I had a professional do it because I didn't want to risk breaking the glass myself. Everything turned out great and it was relatively inexpensive.
I want to make a lamp or two out of my wine jugs, but haven't decided which one. But we planned to attempt it ourself.
