Day 905's Christmas Essential: Sugar Cookies
This week I'm going to share what I consider Christmas essentials -- the things that make the holiday special to me. First up, a certain recipe for sugar cookies that my mom has been making for as long as I can remember. She still uses the recipe card she first wrote when she got it from a friend while living in Kansas (did you know that I was born in Kansas?). It's stained and wrinkled and smells slightly of Crisco oil, but we pull it every year. These probably aren't the kind of sugar cookies you're used to having, but they are delicious, with a little lemony bite. Santa must approve, as he used to gobble them up on Christmas Eve at our house.
Sugar Cookies
1 cup sugar
1 cup Crisco oil
1 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons white vinegar
2 eggs
1 cup margarine, at room temperature
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
Put all of the above ingredients in a bowl and mix at medium speed for 4 minutes. Then add:
4 cups unsifted flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
Blend until well-mixed. Refrigerate dough for at least 4 hours (overnight is best). Roll into walnut-sized balls and roll in colored sugar (available in the baking aisle).
Place on ungreased baking sheet and flatten with a fork. Bake at 350 degrees for 8 minutes.
I have to try these! Every year I try a different sugar cookie recipe for my husband since they're his favorite, but they never seem to turn out well at all! So I thought I'd given up this year, but I think I have to give this one a shot-he loves lemon too!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Sugar Cookies are my absolute FAVORITE cookies ever. Thank you so much for the recipe, I am going to try and make them this week!
ReplyDeleteThis recipe sounds positively delicious! Growing up, sugar cookies weren't one of our Christmas traditions -- We did buckeyes, gingerbread cookies, and made our own dough ornaments every year ... Equally wonderful to be sure, but I'd love to make sugar cookies a Christmas tradition in my married life. The recipe you've featured here reminds me of my favorite madeleine recipe -- Can't wait to whip it up!
ReplyDeleteSave me a cookie! And Merry Christmas to you and Wes!

ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see your list! Sugar cookies are on our 'essentials' list as well; we had them this weekend!
ReplyDeleteThese look wonderful. I will have to try them. Vinegar seems like an odd ingredient for cookies though :)
ReplyDeleteMmmm. I definitely will have to try these! I really want to decorate some sugar cookies before the holiday season is over.
ReplyDeleteI grew up eating sugar cookies -they're the best! I'd love to try your recipe...the lemon bite sounds perfect. Happy holidays! xoTrina

ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas.
I have a dumb question-how did you make/what is the colored sugar part?
ReplyDeleteThank you! I think I've overdosed on baking and can't think!

Dina -- sorry for the confusion. you should be able to find the colored sugar in the baking aisle where the sprinkles are. we've always used red and green, but there are lots of options.
ReplyDeletehope that helps!
printing this recipe out now. yum!
