Day 943: horizontal paneling

I know the thought of wood paneling on the walls make some of us cringe a little, thinking of the faux wood that was so popular in the sixties and seventies. Heck, we have some in our breakfast room (though thankfully it was painted by the previous owner).

It doesn't stop me from wanting horizontal paneling and from wondering if I could really just slap some 1 x 4s on the wall to get the look (by the way, check out the rest of this Rosemary Beach house here).

This oldie-but-goodie from Southern Accents is what did it for me. It adds just the right touch of farmhouse style.

I see it a lot in bathrooms, so maybe that's a good place to start if you're going the DIY route.

Here's another one from Southern Accents. So what do you think? Yes please! Or do you think it will be the seventies paneling of the next generation?

  1. I'm a fan of the horizontal paneling! Great photos showing how pretty it can be!

  2. Didn't the yellow house have horizontal paneling? I can't remember if it was horizontal or just really wide...

  3. No, no nothing dated about this look. I actually think it is a timeless classic and so very charming. I've wanted to do this somewhere in my house as well. It seems so simple, I hope not deceptively so. Beautiful.

  4. I just took a peek at the Rosemary house and thanks so much for sharing it. It's amazing! We actually take a beach trip to Rosemary every summer and I knew this house was familiar as soon as I spotted the exterior. We've rented the house directly across the street for a number of years. I've always been so intrigued by this one and have been dying for a peek. I can't imagine allowing my three boys to put their feet up all over those pristine white slipcovers, but in the summertime this house is always full of kids. I'd love to know their secret.

  7. I've been wondering the same thing!! I'm with you, I think it's gorgeous - but I don't know if it would work in my home, or if I could commit to it. But I always admire it from afar! :)

  8. You can totally do this! Have you seen this John Loecke home? He made his own paneling with 4 x 4s.

  9. I love it. actually I rather like real paneling too ever since seeing bill ingrams first house in cottage living.

  10. It's beautiful! I read in an issue of Better Homes and Gardens that you really can just nail wood planks onto a wall. The article suggested only doing it on one wall to start, and that keeps it from looking over-the-top.

  11. I LOVE it. But I couldn't do it in this house. It would look dated in a very bad 1950's split-level way. I think you'd need a house that has some level of inherent charm for it to work. If we ever turn our screened porch into a fully functional mudroom, I might consider it though. xoxo

  12. My house has horizontal paneling and it was built in 1802 so I don't think it's a fad or will look dated!

  13. It IS so simple! My husband threw some up to cover a large wall in our house in a couple of afternoons. All you need is a circular saw, a nail gun and a level. It's so much easier than drywall and it looks great!

  14. I've been noticing a lot of horizonatal panelling and I must say I like it. Like you said, it looks like a cozy farmhouse.

  15. I love it! We have knotty pine vertical paneling in our basement - straight out of the 70s. I wish we could paint it white but we're going to leave it for the "man cave." Our realtor said people are paying for this look now, so maybe it is coming back!

  16. I love this, and I love all the rooms above. I think it's esp. great in a bathroom, although that bedroom is also calling my name.

  17. i love horizontal painted paneling. the house i grew up in had knotty pine walls. my mom always wanted to paint it but my dad said no. it seems most men like to see real wood for some reason.

  18. I like it! (I also really like that chandelier in the bedroom -- gorgeous!)

  20. My 1906 farmhouse has horizontal wood plank walls in varying sizes that are original to the house. We painted them with BM White Down.

Go for it. Wood walls have been around for a very long time. Longer than sheetrock! If you plan to simply nail the planks to your existing walls, first check to make sure how the additional depth of the wood planks will interface with the trim around your windows and doors. You may also have to install deeper electrical boxes for your outlets and light switches.

  21. Oh I love panelling - it really symbolises 'country' to me and I especially love it in bathrooms.
    Wonderful examples here xx

  22. no, this look is a throw back to a time before drywall when houses had to have wood on the walls because there was nothing else. it's so classic. we love it and use it all the time...but we call it 'planking' because I agree, 'paneling' does sort of make me think of my parents' house :)

  23. I think it's a classic for rustic decorating but, in more traditional interiors, I think it's going to end up a bit like the use of white subway tiles in a herringbone pattern. Cute for a bit, then perhaps a bit dated.

I say this with brutal honesty--but should also be honest and say that the pictures above are some of my absolute favorites and we are looking at doing horizontal planking in our basement bathroom.

    Go figure.

Loved seeing you on Pure Style Home. Lauren is one of my favorites and I've enjoyed your blog for awhile. Great synergy. :)

  24. love this post. i just finished renovating my bathroom. i used wood slats that not only look great but covered up drywall that was impossible to patch. i'm in birmingham as well! check out my blog at louisjohnsondesign.com
