Pretty New Orleans Cottage

No less than four of my friends have taken trips to New Orleans in the last month or so. Their fun vacays got me thinking about how much I liked this Cottage Living Idea House. The traditional shotgun-style house was built to fit right in to this historical neighborhood.

Designed by Ann and Jane Dupuy, the front door opens into a parlor lined with bookcases.

The room's pretty monochromatic scheme sets the tone for the first floor.

I've always loved the simple desk area.

Further in, the kitchen has iconic cottage details like beaded board and bin pull cabinet hardware.

But the real show-stopper is the barn door over the pantry and the chalkboard-painted wall.

The powder room is dressed up with a pretty mirror and a wall-mounted faucet.

Nearby, an office nook is no doubt the home's command center.

Along the back of the house, the living and dining rooms have horizontal planking and French doors. The gas lanterns are a nod to the Crescent City.

I also the the simple, but well-appointed dining room. New Orleans design has a reputation for being over-the-top, so I love this more clean interpretation.

The French doors open to a wonderful back porch overlooking the courtyard garden.

Upstairs, the master bedroom is swathed appropriately in French blue and outfitted with Leontine Linens, of course!

And what's not to love about a wallpapered walk-in closet!

Photos are by Robbie Caponetto and Roger Foley.

I always love your inspiration pic choices.

Do you happen to know of any cute combination rooms out there? My kitchen/living room is open plan, one big space and now I'm thinking I want to get rid of my TV and make it a kitchen/living room/office...oh where to begin!

Oh, my favorite house of all time. I'm going to copy that parlor in our library as soon as we add a second window (hopefully sometime next year.)
PS-- I am so sorry to hear about your job-- a good friend of mine worked for (I'm pretty sure based on what you've posted about your work) the same company and heard the Monday before last Thanksgiving, when she was 32 weeks pregnant with twins, that her department was gone. It was a huge shock, both financially and mentally, but it has turned into a wonderful chance for her to pursue a dream she never thought was possible, and she's a much happier person because of it (and she really loved her old job, so now she's REALLY happy!) Good luck to you-- I found that my creativity really flowed when I was pregnant with my boys.

Project 55 -- it's hard to tell here, but this living/dining is one room. And so is this one: http://newlyweddiaries.blogspot.com/2010/06/rest-of-that-house.html. I think using the same window treatments in both spaces really makes it feel cohesive.

So glad you are back!! Although you are out of your corporate nook I am still trapped by necessity in my cube. So while you are employed by Mother Nature and caught up in the primal tugs and nesting frenzy preparing for Baby Bonds, your blog is like a fresh breeze I soak up during my non-smoker breaks. (Yes, I take NSBs when my smoking co-workers take 5 or 20 to suck their cancer sticks and talk on their cells outside. Big brother, or in this case bratty little sister, is watching :)

JB I love you, this blog, and LOVE love your eye for simple real-life elegance with a few bits of whimsy sprinkled in. Can't wait for the nursery planning updates and brainstorming... OH JOY!!

<3 your yaya blogstalker.
