Painting the Kitchen Floor

Making Room for Baby has turned into Starting a Million Projects. Well, really it's starting a couple of projects, which have led to other projects. Case in point: High on Wes's list of priorities has been moving our washer and dryer from the middle of the kitchen into a closet in the breakfast room.

But to accomodate them, the closet had to get bigger. So the entire wall had to come out. I am getting a pantry out of the deal (HOORAY!) but now we have to deal with the floors in both rooms. The peel-and-stick linoleum tiles have been doing more peeling than sticking lately so I was not sad to see them go. I was a little sad though, to see more linoleum and then lovely vinyl tile underneath.

Since we aren't yet ready for a full-on remodel, we've decided to paint the subfloor. Now, do I want a big checkerboard, stripes, or solid?

I love the idea of painting the subfloor. I vote for stripes.

checkerboard would be hard to execute, but so charming when done! :) can't wait to see what you end up doing.

Checkerboard!! I think there's something elegant to the design-not to mention unexpected. When it's given an antiqued finish, though, is when it really shines. I can't wait to see what you and Wed decide upon. Best of luck!!

I like them all, but I would do stripes. Good visual interest, can make a room seem bigger, not as difficult to execute. Good luck!

I have a big plaid painted on the floor in my kitchen and I love it!!! It is easy but a little time consuming.

My vote is for stripes, cool looking and easier than checkerboards!

I love the idea of a painted floor! I vote for a wide check or stripes. I am happy to help also.

Stripes or checkerboard. I think solid would just look like painted subfloor. A design would give you some texture.

Oh boy, painting a floor. For years, I've been getting up my nerve to pull of carpet in order to replace it with wood which we then will paint. While at "For the love of a house," I saw "The Newlywed Diarie - Painting the Kitchen Floor." If procrastinators have a vote, I say checks. The question is, just how do we finish these floors. I was thinking of three different colonial colors layered (white, black, buff)then checks of a dull charcoal for the base so when the floor gets some character it will be all the more interesting. Best wishes, Linda

We painted the subfloor in our kitchen a few years ago for a temporary fix (You can see pics here: http://southernexposure1.squarespace.com/southern-exposure/2009/6/17/i-must-be-crazy.html). We did a white and gray checkerboard and I loved it! But after a while, because the subfloor is so soft, it did start scuffing and breaking down a bit so we recently laid tile on top of it. Good luck with whatever you choose!

We painted our porch floor, it's such a great look (check it out here: http://thesillygoosefarm.blogspot.com/2010/08/who-wants-to-live-in-country.html).

Be sure to use special floor paint, and good luck! Can't wait to see it when it's done.

what a fun project! start with just a plain color and if you get bored add a pattern to it, I cant wait to see how it comes out!

we just put down vinyl tile in three color stripes. I got my handy husband to cut some tiles in half on the table saw for a thin stripe 6 inch black, 12 inch dark grey, 12 inch light grey,

VCT was fairly easy, but mark your floor off in a grid and mark the walls were each stipe goes. We laid out a dry fit.
