I've had a small obsession with table-top Christmas trees for about a year now. Specifically, with trees sitting in pretty urns. I fully planned to apply these instructions to our own 5-6 foot tree (with a bigger urn, of course) but Wes was skeptical (that's the engineer in him, I guess).
The problem with my plan was the center of gravity. The darling urn I picked out was fiberglass, and Wes was certain it would tumble over. Plan B was to place the tree stand in a basket, but I couldn't quite find what I was looking for.
Plan C is to make it my mission in 2010 to find a suitable urn for our tree. And if that doesn't work, I think a galvanized bucket will do just fine. What is your tree in?

ReplyDeleteWhile these ideas look lovely. I had the same concerns about the tree tipping over. I don't know how some of them stay up, I am assuming they must be fake trees that don't weigh much or lots of unseen wires. Either way I would love to do a very large urn or even the basket...someday. MB

ReplyDeleteMy tree is in a big galvanized bucket and I love it! The bucket is big enough for me to sit the whole tree stand inside the bucket. I got it at a local Tractor Supply Company - it was only around $20!

I really love the galvanized bucket idea! I think that would be a good idea. We just have a tree skirt that the dog and cat constantly run across and it is always a mess :)
ReplyDeleteI love this. We put up our little tree but don't have so much as a tree skirt! I wrapped up some presents last night and so now you can't see the plastic stand. But I've got to get soemthing!
ReplyDeleteI adore tabletop trees.. it was necessary this year due to a certain 15 month old! We have our in a vintage drum. We may never go back to a big one. Ours isn't as pretty as the ones that you showed, but it is alive so we can plant it later!

Last year, on a total lark, I tossed our tree into a metal toy box! It fit perfectly and I fell in love with it instantly.

ReplyDeleteThere is an article in the NYT about "renting" live Christmas trees for a couple of weeks. The tree is delivered to your home in a bucket so you'd be all set (if you lived in LA where they are doing this!).

What about maybe taking some cardboard or foam and covering it with a pretty fabric or some burlap and a ribbon and molding it around your Christmas tree stand. This way you don't actually have to deal with getting your stand inside something and it will look like it is.

I realize I'm 3 years late to this party, but I wanted to let you know how to put a tree in an urn. You find a piece of PVC pipe just larger than your tree pole (trunk on real tree) and pour quick crete around it in the urn. Only poor enough in to make it sturdy/a little bit heavy for stability. Then put your tree in the PVC. Voila!
