Day 957's question

Yesterday as I was flipping through the new issue of Lonny I couldn't decided if I liked the light, bright, fresh rooms or the darker, moodier rooms better. If you look at my house, lighter and brighter has definitely won, but I'm loving darker images more and more. Maybe it's the winter.

Neither of these are from Lonny (this is an old favorite from House & Garden -- SM, I know you love this one!), but you get the idea. What do you prefer? Light and perhaps colorful, or dark and perhaps cozier?

  1. I prefer light, bright, and colorful rather than dark. To me, dark has a depressing effect on me. The brighter colors keep me in better moods. They also remind me of visiting the Caribbean. :D

  2. I prefer the darker colors ... At least in terms of paint. I love the look of muted walls paired with a combination of bright and light accessories. Like you said, could be the winter, but it's definitely the look I've been gravitating toward recently!

  3. I like them both ... it just depends on the room. Kitchens? Light and bright. A den with a fireplace and lined with bookshelves? Dark and cozy.

  4. i love light, monochromatic schemes for my home, but also love visiting a bachelor pad done up in a dark and masculine (?) scheme... very cozy den-ish.... (p.s. love you blog)

  5. I think I would get tired of the darker colors after a while, even though I think they are beautiful! Sometimes, I just need something bright to add happiness to my day.

  6. Light and bright!! It makes me happier especially when the sun is shining through the windows and reflects off the lighter walls.

  7. Right now I am loving dark and cozy!! that could change any minute but right now that's what makes me happy!

  8. I like light and bright but would also love to have a secret dark library - lots of books, low lamps, pretty rugs, dark shelves and fireplace . . .
Love your blog and how you number the days!

  9. I've been in the light and bright mood...which has resulted in lots of painting projects as of late. We live in an area (the North West) that can see some pretty grey days though so we're always keeping that in mind. But I can appreciate the dark cozier colors, they seem very academic to me. Or perhaps it's the books!!! ; ) Trina

  10. As much as I love the drama of darker colors in a room, I could never live with them for very long. I love rooms that are bright, airy and saturated with sunshine!

  11. That room from House & Garden is my dream room...one day!

  12. I've always liked lighter colors--- but lately I've liked darker elements in a room (but mixed w/ the lighter colors). It may be the weather/winter months getting to me!

  13. I struggle between the two, but I think lighter and brighter always wins for me. I notice in the colder months I definitely gravitate towards cozier rooms and in the warmer months, the brighter the better!

  14. This is where I go back and forth. I love light and airy but there is something about moody rooms I really love.

  15. this is TOTALLY my ongoing dilemma! I have to paint my living room that has a high ceiling and a bookcase at the end wall, and I cannot figure out whether I should paint the bookcase dark gray or do the whole thing white! I have to recover my couches, that are currently taupe and black, and the bookcase colour which is some sort of beige does not go with the lighter taupe or fendi, as we say in Brazil, walls! This lightxdark thing keeps me musing all day! I have amazing tropical light outside, it seems logical to do white inside, but too much of a good thing can be tiring, so I just cannot figure out what I should do!

  16. I love them both - which is probably my problem. Most of my house is light except for the dining room/library (after my room swithch-eroo). It's painted BM North Creek Brown - but the room gets a ton of sun. Love these pics.

  17. I finally decided to paint my living room white. but I did it with a very soft patina of white paint on a cream base. You can barely distinguish the effect, but it looks cozy.
I still don't know what I am going to do about slipcovers. right now they are dark taupe, but too washed out and needing to be replaced. I can't go all white because of dogs, kids, etc.
