Octoberfest!
It's October! One of my favorite months of the year! I'm going to celebrate by ...
Making pumpkin bread. And pumpkin waffles. And probably pumpkin bread pudding. Thank goodness the pumpkin shortage is over!
Picking some goldenrod. I did last year and it was so pretty and cheerful, lasted quite a while, and to my surprise, didn't shed or make me sneeze.
Eating bowls of steaming hot soup. I could use a few new recipes for this season; what soup do you love to make?
Picking out a pretty pumpkin (or two).
Making homemade apple cider doughnuts. I wanted to do this last year, but never did. Perhaps if I start thinking about it this month it will actually happen before Christmas.
Hm, three of the five involve food. Interesting. What are you going to do this month?
Top three photos are mine. Pumpkins are from The Martha Blog. Doughnuts are from Smitten Kitchen.
One of my favorite soups is meatball, barley & mushroom soup from Food & Wine magazine. I love its earthiness and its so delicious.
ReplyDeleteYummmm, these look like delicious recipes! Your pumpkin bread that you posted last year is a fav among all my friends and family! Would you mind posting (or emailing) that Honey Corn Muffin recipe you posted last Fall? We all loved it, but I can't find it in my recipes and I'd love to make it for my inlaws this week who are here from France...with Zesty Pumpkin Soup...our Fall traditions are new to them! Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteHi Dina -- here are the honey cornbread muffins I posted: http://www.realsimple.com/food-recipes/browse-all-recipes/honey-corn-bread-muffins-00000000022359/index.html#
ReplyDeleteMmmm might have to make them soon!
Those donuts look scrumptious! I am going to go on cool Autumn walks, make soup (I would suggest turkey & wild rice), plant mums in my front pots, and make a pumpkin pie!
ReplyDeleteHappy Fall!
Gail
Yumm! I love anything flavored with pumpkins. I think fall calls for the best recipes.
ReplyDeleteWhat am I doing this fall? Well, sadly I am not making any big plans to cook anything festive (the itty bitty kitchen takes the joy out of baking). But fun fall activities are on my list; camping, tailgating, haunted hay rides, and pumpkin carving.
I just bought a gallon of buttermilk for fried chicken and I think I will use some for these doughnuts, sounds perfect.
ReplyDeleteWe're going to be apple-picking, baking bread, bonfires, pumpkin picking (and carving), hay rides, chili and college football, caramel apples, and collecting pretty leaves. October is the best.
Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteWe will be celebrating our baby's 1st Halloween this month and introducing my French in-laws to October traditions here-pumpkin patch, carving, pumpkin everything recipes, chili, football, apple picking, etc. etc.!
This is my first visit to your blog, and it's lovely! I really enjoyed the story of Rooster the cow! LOL! This month I'm making a chocolate cake, with chocolate hazelnut frosting! Last night I canned some spicy pickled peppers for the holidays and as hostess gifts! When you have time please visit my fairly new blog, I love company and new Followers are so exciting! I enjoyed my visit today!

Ok, so most of my fall ideas also involve food...
ReplyDeleteI think it is the nesting season and I like to think of it as storing away "acorns" for the winter!
Favourite fall soup is this one:

You can skip the saffron and use a lower-fat cream or even homo milk and it still comes out great!

ReplyDeleteThis is one of our all-time favorite soups:

I'm going to make my mom's Garden Harvest Soup, reupholster our couches, make a fall wreath, and meet my new nephew who's due to be born this month! Sounds like everyone is going to have a spectacular October!!
ReplyDeleteI love your list! I hope to make some new recipes if found here...http://sammyw.wordpress.com/...like apple cake. Sounds yum! Happy Fall!
ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer,
ReplyDeleteWe've been going crazy with pumpkin everything lately too! There's nothing that says fall more than pumpkins and anything made with pumpkins.
Love this time of year...

Forgot to say I have 2 great fall soup recipes if you are interested: Zesty Pumpkin Soup (the best pumpkin soup recipe I have ever tried!), and Chicken Chilicious (it's a broth based shredded chicken soup with white and black beans, cilantro, etc. and we eat it with Scoops.
ReplyDeleteI love any variation of pumpkin/apple soup this time of year. I'll have to dig up the recipe, but it's from Miss Martha!
ReplyDeletehere's a REALLY good soup recipe for you. I'm eating left-overs as I type. Wish I had one of those doughnuts for dessert!

I am celebrating October by making pumpkin cupcakes, putting pumpkins by the front door, and enjoying long morning walks pushing the stroller with one hand and a hot cup of coffee in the other.

ReplyDeleteLook on my blog for the tortilla soup recipe. Recipes are labeled on the sidebar. Everyone who makes it LOVEs it. It is easy and delish!!!
ReplyDeleteI know I'm a bit behind here, but I'm desperate to know where that lovely little black and white plate you have there came from!
ReplyDeleteMy mom collects pretty black and white plates and she'd LOVE one like that for Christmas maybe!!
If you happen to remember, would you share??
the black and white plates came from HomeGoods last year. I bought similar brown ones several years before, so it never hurts to keep an eye out!
