Day 773: guest bedroom reveal

I suppose it's finally time to show you the guest bedroom. I deviated a bit from the original plan, but I'm happy with it, and it'll be easy to update and change in the future. Wes built the headboard according to my measurements while I wasn't at home, and it somehow became extremely tall -- that's what happens when the writer in the family does the measuring, and then the engineer follows her specs exactly! We were planning to chop the legs off a few inches, but now it doesn't seem as big as it did. Moving on.

Most of the money I made at the yard sale went to not-so-fun items for the room such as a mattress pad, sheets, pillow forms, and a bed skirt. All of that, including the white quilt, came from either HomeGoods or TJ Maxx. I got the navy ikat pillow cover on sale (and with a gift card) at Pottery Barn, and the pillow form came from the clearance rack at HomeGoods -- this was a budget project, remember?

Most everything else you see here (mirror, chair, book, trunk, glass bottles) came either out of a closet or another room in our house. We found the green lamp at a yard sale for $3, and the shade is from Target. Of course, everything in my house is in flux, and I've since given this lamp to my cousin - ha!

The paint color is Blue Shamrock by Olympic, and the antique dresser came from my dad. I got the blue and white plates at TJ Maxx (surprise!) several months ago and have been waiting on the perfect spot for them. The rug was half-off at Pier 1, and I made the fixed flat-fold roman shade by loosely following these directions. The gray fabric is the same as the headboard, and I paid $1.50/yard for it at Wal-Mart.

Here's the view from the door. The piece of furniture on the right is a hand-me-down from Wes' parents that got a coat (or three) of white paint early in it's life with us. I stash random decorating items inside it and affectionately refer to it as my "prop closet."

Think the headboard is too tall? I can't decide.

There you have it! I still have a couple of small things to do, and, as with the rest of my house, it's constantly changing as I get the urge to move things around a bit.

lOVE your $3 green lamp so much!! I like the headboard, the height doesn't bother me because the color of the fabric isn't overpowering. We have a leather headboard that is a little shorter, but I feel it appears too tall because of the color. Love your blog, I am a new follower.
Smiles!

ps love that trunk too!

Jen I love all of it! It looks great. I especially love the headboard. I know you freaked out at first that it was a bit too large, but I love it!!!! Kudos!

Now I hope you get many happy guests to stay in it. hint hint :)

I love the headboard. I actually prefer the height. The room is really relaxing. Awesome job... and on a budget at that.

Loving every bit of it - especial the wall color. Serene, restful, elegant.

I love the whole room! It's both soothing and inviting. No shame in budget projects!

oh my gosh, what a beautiful room!! Everything looks so clean and comfortable, its the perfect space for houseguest when they come visit. I love the ikat pillow, the rug and the headboard is amazing! I would not change one thing about it- I think the height of it makes the room.

Maybe if you add end tables and two matching lamps on the taller side it will balance everything out. But even without that, I love the room- great job!!

I like! I do think the headboard works. Like your wooden chest as a side table as well. The only piece I'm not sure about is the mirror over the bed.

I was thinking about you last week when I was working on my guest bedroom because I took much of the inspiration from your "blue and white" posts. When I get a chance, I'll email you a photo.

Love it! Great job! Love the little plates above the chest of drawers... too cute. They were meant to go there-- don't give those to your cousin! :)

Can I ask how you attached the head board to the legs. I am about 1/2 through one for our guest room.

I would love to be a guest in your home--the colors, mix of pattern, texture are spot on. and I have NEVER met a headboard that was too tall, only too short. Don't you dare change a thing. Great job and I have really enjoyed your blog.

I just found you - although I've definitely "heard" of you through the vast blogosphere!
The room looks outstanding, and I think the height of the headboard "makes" it - pleasant surprise, no?

Happy to "meet' you!

The room looks amazing! Very soothing and relaxing. If you are still concerned about the height of the headboard, maybe taking down the mirror above it would help. It seems to elongate the headboard. Everything looks wonderful. Great job!

no! It's not too tall at all.
The headboard looks perfect, the whole room looks perfect.

Lovely room. I really like the headboard. Maybe some euroshams would take up a little more visual space on the headboard and you would feel better about it.

Jennifer said...

funny you should say that, Nichole, Euro shams are on my list.

several of you have mentioned the mirror. I love it, so it's staying :) I like a little metal finish in every room.

Love the room and like the mirror but is it hung on center, perhaps it is the photo but it looks like it is a smidgen too far right. Love your blog.

Looks great! Tall headboards are in (just saw one featured in Canadian House & Home) and I like the interest yours adds to the room.

Nichole said...

So, I know you can pick out your own shams but... I saw these today while perusing one of my favorite sites:

Not super budget friendly, but cool. Lavender would be great as well:)

I was so surprised to see your green lamp in this room. I have the exact same lamp!!! It belonged to my grandmother and is one of my most treasured pieces of decor! I have had a hard time finding a place for it in my house, but you have inspired me to find a spot for it. Love the blog keep up the great work!

Jennifer said...

ya'll are just to nice! and you're all invited to come stay a while :)

Home Inspired -- that is too funny. I'll admit the color of the lamp is a little shocking, but the price could NOT be beat, and I love the shape. nothing an updated shade couldn't fix. you'll have to share a photo when you find a spot for yours.

I read but have never commented (or have I, can't recall!). I love it, too...just brought home paint samples and put them on the wall. One is VERY similar to your blue. I was nervous, but I"m liking it more after seeing your room! I plan to do a white/creme quilt and shams, too...tones down the bright walls in my opinion. Looks so fresh! Love the blog!
