Day 318
I've had these pots for about 8 months, and finally put them to good use last week. They sit on the front porch and flank the front door, and was trying to get the look of those really lush mixed planters that you see outside of Old Navy in the summer, with caladiums, petunias, and something leafy and purple that I can't remember the name of. I'm not sure if I quite got there, but it doesn't matter now because this is what they looked like last night:
The poor little petunias were scattered all over the yard, and you can see that Maddie had tons of fun doing it! The real kicker is that she was banished from the house because Wes and I were cleaning up evidence of a little present she left on the living room rug. Needless to say, it was a tough night to be a puppy parent.
I think I'm just going to give up on re-planting flowers for now, as the caladiums (those big leafy things in the back) were looking the best and Maddie seems less interested in them. Sheesh.

LOL! That little mischief maker. This is too cute. I love the way they looked (b/f the Wrath of Maddie).
God bless our pets...we have finally worked out a system that keeps our dachshund Oscar in the kitchen while we are gone: baby gates (2 doorways to kitchen)...with 2 folding chairs left folded up (flat) shoulder to shoulder inside the room leaning against the gate. The baby gates by themselves worked for about 3 days...then he climbed over...then when we raised the gates a bit, he chewed a hole in one. But with the folding chair fence he hasn't escaped yet! And we banished the last bit of carpet from our 1975 home a couple weeks ago, but we sure did have our share of "presents" left every now and then on that poor carpet.
I found your site through This Young House' blog roll. I have enjoyed following your newlywed/new house journey! We've been in our house almost 3 years, but it is our first and we are still having fun redoing it little by little.
been there, done that!! but with the squirrels...i had planted impatients around these double topiaries in pots on the front porch. those darn squirrels dug up the impatients nearly every day. i tried all the tricks, even sprinkling red pepper around the pots. i finally gave up! this year, i have ferns in them. the culprits aren't nearly as attracted to those! :)
Ahhhh yes, the little "presents" that our pets leave us. Let's just say that Maddie enjoys fertilizing the grass. It's unfortunate that sometimes that grass happens to be seagrass woven into a not cheap rug in the living room.
We've thought about baby gates, but we would really have to get 3 of them, and I still don't think it would help. We put her in the office sometimes, but she whines incessantly. I am in the process of installing an invisible fence outside so hopefully that will keep her from being bored when she has energy and we don't.
When we got home yesterday Oscar was out...seems he had knocked over the folding chairs leaned against one of the gates. Next step: place breakfast nooks chairs in front of the folding chair "walls"...in front of the baby gates. Good grief. Good luck with the invisible fence!
oh dear, maddie!
you got to love her.
they were beautiful though!
kimberly -- sounds like you've got your hands full!
