Day 634's inspiring kitchen

I really like this kitchen, featured in a recent issue of Southern Accents. The homeowners, Michael and Alison Brewer, offer ten tips for remodeling in the article.

Exposed shelving sure is pretty. But how practical is it, really? The contents of our cabinets would have to be, ahem, rearranged if they were to be left open, but I'm not opposed to doing a little cleaning out (do we really need 25 plastic cups emblazoned with logos from assorted sandwich shops and sporting venues?).

I definitely like to see the upper and lower cabinets painted different colors, and I think the reign of the stark white kitchen might be coming to an end in favor of something a little warmer. What do you think? Still love it, or kind of over it?

I think I've said this before, but I'm having a moment with dark window sashes and doors. Might be taking a paint brush to some of ours soon!

white kitchens are like anything else -- in and out of style. but for me, it will always look classic, clean and calm.

my own kitchen isn't white, but it's because I just loved the color and style the previous owners had used and we just kept it when we moved in.

but my dream kitchen is always white -- this probably stems from my mother, who's always had a white kitchen. I keep telling her she's so chic and in style right now ;o)

I love white kitchens too! When we moved into our house, the first thing I did was paint the cabinets white. I tried the open shelving for the upper cabinets... my dishes were really pretty and it lookd nice, but I had to put the doors back on because everything got so dusty!

Im not a huge fan of the open shelving trend, although I think it looks lovely, it's just not very livable - at least not for me.

However, I just ADORE the idea of painting the top & bottom cabinets different, complimentary colors. I just think that that countertop (whatever material it is) should tie the two colors toegther.

I agree about the practicality of open shelving. Maybe I'm a little obsessive, but I think I'd want to wash everything immediately after pulling it down to use. I've got a whole house air filter, but still there's always a little dust lurking.

As for the dark sashes and doors - I have always loved this idea. It's a little surprise!

I'm always thinking more function than form, so the white kitchen kind of scares me. I love white, it's very calming to me, but I just envision spending hours trying to keep it perfectly white with all of the cooking I do. As for the open cabinets, love the look but I don't know if I could live with it. And my dishes aren't pretty enough to attempt it. It does look cool though. I love how it can open up a small kitchen.

I love how open that kitchen is, the island is so pretty with those stools. Not sure how well it would work in my house because I love to be able to hide a big mess in cabinets- but this is something to aspire to :)

As awesome as this looks, I keep wondering why their pristine white kitchenaid mixer doesn't seem to have an electrical cord? I can't imagine how they've plugged it in on that island.

Well, I guess that's what home decor photoshoots are all about - living in the dream of how we'd love to have our homes look!

Ellen -- I agree, they are definitely classic. Maybe I'm just over it since they are EVERYWHERE these days :)

Nathan -- don't old houses just seem to produce dust? Oy.

Linds -- I will definitely have to leave some cabinets covered to hide my mess!
